We, as a nation, need to gain greater control over our energy resources and fuels and work to improve our environment. The SETRPC understands how vital the use of alternative fuels is to the local economy and health of its citizens. Therefore, we initiated the South East Texas Clean Cities Program. The South East Texas Clean Cities Program is a locally-based government/industry partnership, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to expand the use of alternative fuels and vehicles.
Defined by the Energy Policy Act (EPACT), alternative fuels include methanol, denatured ethanol, and/or other alcohols; mixtures containing 85% (or more by volume) of methanol, denatured ethanol, and/or other alcohols with gasoline or other fuels; natural gas; liquefied petroleum gas (propane); hydrogen; coal derived liquefied fuels; fuels (other than alcohol) derived from biological materials; and electricity.
The South East Texas Clean Cities Coalition, along with the SETRPC, promote public awareness of alternative fuels by informing and educating city/county officials, school districts, ports, special purpose districts, major and small private fleet operators and citizens about the benefits of alternative fuels. The Advisory Committee is represented by local, state and federal agencies and area businesses. Activities of the Coalition include, but are not limited to, maintaining a diverse transportation stakeholder base for effective program participation, organization of stakeholder meetings, recruitment of partners, media relations, promotions and special events.
