The South East Texas Foster Grandparent Program provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for income-eligible adults age 55 and older to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and youth. Through one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, Foster Grandparents build supportive relationships with children in classrooms, juvenile detention centers, hospitals, child care facilities, and Head Start programs.

These caring relationships help children overcome academic, emotional, and social challenges while promoting confidence, resilience, and positive life choices. By providing encouragement, guidance, and stability, Foster Grandparents play a vital role in breaking cycles of drug abuse, crime, and other challenges that affect many of today’s youth. Their wisdom, compassion, and life experiences create positive, lasting impacts on the children they serve and strengthen communities throughout Southeast Texas.

Program Highlights

• More than 35,000 Foster Grandparent volunteers serve students in public, private, and charter schools across the nation.

• The South East Texas Foster Grandparent Program has proudly served the community for more than 37 years.

• Income-eligible adults aged 55 and older serve as dedicated mentors and tutors to children and youth.

• Volunteers serve in early childhood programs, pre-K, elementary and middle schools, juvenile detention centers, a child care center, hospitals, and a mental health facility.

• The program serves Hardin, Jefferson, and Orange Counties.

• Eligible Foster Grandparent volunteers receive a non-taxable stipend of $4.00 per hour.

• Since 1989, Foster Grandparents have contributed more than 900,000 hours of service to Southeast Texas, enriching the lives of thousands of children and families.
